The president of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC), Juan Manuel Lema Rodicio , assured this Tuesday that the transfer of technology is an essential tool to overcome the health and economic crisis caused by the coronavirus. He did it during the presentation of the Technology Transfer Awards in Galicia , held in Santiago, where the RelEYEble company from Pontevedra was recognized . Lema emphasized that in moments like this, society demands solutions that are only possible through research and the subsequent application of its results through innovation, which serves both for future vaccines and treatments and for formulas that make it easier for companies to adapt to the new normal .
The awards, which reached their sixth edition this year, recognize the best knowledge transfer practices from research organizations to the productive fabric, with an endowment of 6,000 net euros in each of its categories. The Country Email List competition is promoted by the RAGC, with the collaboration of the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN) of the Xunta de Galicia.
The director of GAIN, Patricia Argerey , emphasized that the transfer of technology is a priority in the R+D+i policies of the Xunta de Galicia, to the extent that it allows socio-economic value of the investment made in science. In this area, the start-up in Galicia of a pioneering program to support the transfer of research results, Ignicia Proba de Concepto, stood out, which since 2016 has made it possible to support 16 Galician knowledge center projects, of which five spin-offs have already emerged and signed the first license agreement with the industry.
Argerey also highlighted the important role played by communication and the dissemination of science in social awareness towards science, especially at times like this, because "an educated and informed citizenry will be more inclined to bet on science and innovation".
Xosé Alberto Díez de Castro, Secretary General of Universities of the Xunta de Galicia, also took part in the presentation of the awards; the chancellor of the University of Santiago de(USC), Antonio López; the chancellor of the University (UDC), Julio Abalde; the vice-chancellor of Communication and Institutional Relations of the University of Vigo (UVigo), Mónica Valderrama; and the institutional coordinator of the Superior Council of Scientific Research (CSIC), Antonio de Ron.
